AGILITY
Agility / Jumping
A fun way to take the team work with your dog to a new level. In this exciting dog sport you negotiate a set course of obstacles within a time limit without faults to achieve a “clean run”.
Different levels of heights for obstacles allow dogs in all sizes to compete. Dogs must be 18 months old before they can commence in competition. Young dogs can start training from about 10 months of age and will learn to work with directional signals from the handler to negotiate hoops, tunnels and contact obstacles (dog walk, A frame, table) at a lower height. Young dogs will not start jumping until after the age of 14 months to allow for their bones and muscles to fully develop. Then it will only be a gradual increase to full height (according to size of the dog).
It’s fun, it’s exciting and needs commitment from the handler – but it’s one of the most rewarding activities you can do with your canine partner. Agility is the fastest growing dog sport in the world.
The Cairns City Kennel Club conducts Agility beginner’s workshops twice yearly. Please talk to Andrea or Glenn.
